Gardens of Remembrance – Tome 1
Origins, burial culture, and the foundations of remembrance
Tome I marks the beginning of the Gardens of Remembrance journey. It introduces the visual language, thematic concerns, and historical framework that underpin the entire trilogy.
Photographed across Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and Germany, this first volume focuses on cemeteries dating from approximately the late 18th to early 20th century. These sites represent a period when burial grounds were designed as places of permanence, symbolism, and carefully structured remembrance.
Alongside the photographic chapters, Tome I includes the first part of A Grave History — an accessible introduction to Western European burial culture. This section outlines how religious belief, social hierarchy, artistic movements, and urban development shaped the cemeteries we now encounter in decline.
Informative texts on funerary symbolism are interwoven throughout the book, offering insight into recurring motifs such as angels, urns, obelisks, mourning figures, and vegetal imagery.
Tome I establishes the question at the heart of the trilogy:
how did these once-sacred spaces come to be forgotten?

“The graveyards featured in Gardens of Remembrance offer a sense of timeless tranquility, their weathered gravestones and crumbling monuments bearing witness to human existence. The interplay of light and shadow, captured masterfully in black and white by the artist, creates a dramatic and evocative atmosphere.”
